Leonardo DiCaprio’s attempts to give up smoking gave him nightmares.

The ‘Shutter Island’ actor has been trying to kick the deadly habit but had to stop using nicotine patches, adhesive pads which emit low dosages of nicotine, which is found in cigarettes, after they caused him extreme sleeping problems.

He explained, “When I take nicotine patches I have blood curdling nightmares of murder. Mass murders.

“I wake up in the middle of the night and have to take them off. I don’t really remember my dreams that much apart from then. I don’t know what that means about me from a psychological point of view but that’s the truth.”

While Leonardo is trying to suppress his urge to have a cigarette when he wants to relax, the actor recently admitted he uses drinking with friends as “cheap therapy” in order to switch off from his complex movie roles.

He said, “I go out and have a drink every once in a while. I take what I do very seriously, and when I’m on the set that’s all I focus on, so my vice is to hang out with my friends and talk about absolutely nothing of importance whatsoever and act like a complete idiot because I’ve got to filter out a lot of the serious stuff I’m dealing with all the time.

“It’s like therapy to be a complete idiot with my friends, and it’s just fantastic.”

Nicole Richie is getting married.

The socialite confirmed yesterday, February 15, that she is officially engaged to her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden, with whom she has daughter Harlow, two, and five-month-old son Sparrow, when she appeared on ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’, showing off a large engagement ring.

She then joined friends at New York restaurant Abe and Arthurs, where she was overheard talking about her impending nuptials.

A source said, “She was glowing. She was telling her table how happy she was.”

Good Charlotte singer Joel, 30, later confirmed the news, revealing they had managed to keep their engagement secret for some time.

He tweeted, “Yep. I’m engaged. Very happy.

“Yeah we’ve been engaged for a while so your all kind of late on that. But Thanks for the hooplah all the same (sic).”

The couple denied that they had plans to marry as late as last year, and were in no plans to rush into tying the knot.

Nicole said, “One day I would love to get married. It’s not something we’re talking about right now. If my kids ask me to get married, I’d get married.

“I think for both of us, we are going to do it because we want to, not because that’s what you do. We’re going to do it when the time’s right.”

However, it has been reported that the couple are planning to marry this summer and wedding plans are already well under way.

The ‘Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen’ actress, who has an on/off relationship with actor Brian Austin Green, said she is a very maternal person but suffers a deep fear that she won’t be able to have kids biologically.

She said, “No-one believes me when I talk about this, but I’m really maternal. I worry that because I’ve always wanted kids so much, as the world goes sometimes, I won’t be able to have them – even though I would be able to provide them with such an amazing environment.”

The 23-year-old actress also told how she isn’t interested in competing with other Hollywood beauties and, because of the nature of the film industry, is wary of who she trusts.

She added to W magazine, “With acting, my main weakness is nerves. I have no confidence, and because of that I’m always second-guessing myself.”

“I feel intimidated by fashion. I hate doing photo shoots. But there are some women you could put in underwear and photograph them, and it looks really classy and it doesn’t necessarily provoke a pin-up image.

“But with me it does, immediately, as soon as I’m in underwear.”

Ben Stiller will only use twitter for “sensible” issues.

The ‘Zoolander’ star has his own page on the networking site but unlike other celebrities, he doesn’t want to give away every detail about his life but does accept it can be used for good causes.

Ben, who is currently at the Berlin Film Festival said, “I like to use twitter. You have direct contact to your fans and can stop when you feel it’s too much. And on the other hand twitter can help a lot. After the catastrophe in Haiti we were able to start a few charity actions really quickly for example.

“But maybe I should write what sort of burger I ate in Berlin and how great that was, too. No, really, there are sources you can use like twitter. But I want to use them in a sensible way. And not waste them.”

However, Ben does admit twitter is a good way of communicating for those people who don’t really enjoy talking.

Talking about his role as Robert Greenberg in new movie ‘Greenberg’, the actor told website morgenpost.de, “He doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t do much. He is just thinking about himself. This new form of communication, people who talk to each other again but in a new sort of way, it could work for him.”

John Mayer has been branded “kind, caring and compassionate” by a children’s charity.

The ‘Gravity’ singer has come under fire over a recent interview he gave – in which he described sleeping with ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson as like “a drug” and used the word “n****r” – but has now been defended by The Isaac Foundation, which raises money for children with a rare enzyme deficiency known as MPS VI.

On the official blog, the organization wrote, “I don’t care what Playboy magazine writes about the man, and I don’t care what John says to the journalists that write what they do about him. In America, it’s all part of the game – get in a magazine, light up the blogosphere, stay relevant – end of story.”

John, who is more famed for his womanizing ways and wild sex life, has donated money to the group as well as spending lots of time with Isaac, the little boy with MPS VI whose parents founded the organization.

The foundation added, “I know he has said things that turn people off. I know he’s said things that make him sound like someone you would never want your children around – ever. But I also know the person that he truly is and the good things he tries to accomplish with the celebrity status he’s achieved.

“Write what you want about John, think what you will, but before you hand down your verdict on what kind of person he really is, please consider the good he has done in his life.”

Following the publication of the interview, John broke down in tears live on stage, saying he could no longer cope with attention that surrounds his life.
