Much of Canada was dismayed today to hear the news that folk music star Gordon Lightfoot had died.

Fortunately for Canadians, Lightfoot lives to croon another day. “Several prominent news sites in the CanWest chain” were duped by the hoax:

At 2:40 p.m. EST, for instance, the Vancouver Sun’s Web site posted a brief announcing Lightfoot’s death at 71, quoting fellow singer Ronnie Hawkins as saying his old friend had passed away last night. By 2:52, it was removed from the Web site.

“Gord’s alive as far as I know, unless something happened in the last half hour,” said Anne Leibold of Lightfoot’s Early Morning Productions. “I talked to Gord a half hour ago. He’s fine.”

Twitter, the source of many premature death rumors, has been cited as a possible source for the “RIP Gordon Lightfoot” meme. Lightfoot dismissed rumors of his death as premature:

“I haven’t had so much airplay on my music in weeks,” he joked on CP24 this afternoon after confirming he was very much alive.

“Everything is fine,” he said in an interview. “We are doing Casino Rama. We have an opening there and numerous other things. We’re starting back into our tour at the end of this month. We’ll be doing many things.”

So Canadians, despite what you may have heard via several Canadian news outlets, Gordon Lightfoot is not dead.

Demi Moore has admitted she cries “at everything”.

The 47-year-old actress has confessed she gets very teary over the smallest of things, including heart-warming television adverts.

She is quoted as saying, “I cry at everything. Even if I am happy. Even at commercials on television. I can’t help it. Ashton doesn’t mind, but I do tend to cry at anything.”

One person who is unlikely to make Demi cry is her husband Ashton Kutcher.

The 32-year-old actor recently revealed his secret to being a good husband – good manners.

He said, “My brother had a heart transplant when he was 13, and my parents were at the hospital a lot so I went and I stayed at a friend’s house. And his mother was this really wonderful, wonderful woman that sort of taught me a bunch of things like table manners and how to treat a woman – pulling out her chair, opening the door for her.

“So while my brother was in the hospital, I basically learned etiquette and how to use it when you’re dating a woman.”

Simon Cowell is planning the “biggest showbiz wedding for years”.

The music mogul’s friends have confirmed he proposed to girlfriend Mezhgan Hussainy on Valentine’s Day, February 14, and are amazed at how happy the make-up artist is making him.

One pal told The Sun newspaper, “Simon’s definitely engaged. I’ve never seen him so happy. He’s known Mezhgan several years and they’ve grown close. He finally popped the question.

“He knows it’s right this time. It will be the biggest showbiz wedding in years.”

According to those close to the 50-year-old star, whose ex-girlfriends include singer Sinitta and presenter Terri Seymour, he was keen to keep news of his engagement under wraps because he has said several times he never wants to marry and feared looking foolish.

A friend of Simon’s revealed, “Simon’s asked us all to keep quiet about the engagement because I think, after everything he’s said over the years, he’s a bit embarrassed by it.

“He’s an incredibly instinctive person and this is just right. When he turned 50 in October, he was forced to evaluate things and really think about what he wanted from life.”

Simon’s close friend, Louis Walsh, one of his fellow judges on UK TV talent show ‘The X Factor,’ admitted he was surprised by the news, but thinks settling down will be good for his pal.

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper, “I’m very surprised but I’m delighted he’s got engaged. She is fantastic for him, very grounding, which is exactly what he needs to keep that ego in check.”

The couple, who met on the set of ‘American Idol’ seven years ago have been dating for six months, but appeared in public together for the first time earlier this month.

Sandra Bullock and her husband have been reunited with their lost dog.

The ‘Blind Side’ actress and Jesse James are delighted after they received a call to say someone had their beloved pooch Cinnabun, who went missing three weeks ago.

Jesse tweeted, “Some lady just called n said she has Cinnabun, Didnt no she was missing. Said she will bring her in 20 min. This better be real… (sic)”

An hour later he added “Woooooo Hooooo!!!! It’s Her!!!

“So happy! Thnx Everyone for all the help She looks like she hz had quite the Adventure! (sic)”

Jesse and Sandra were initially cautious when they were informed the dog had been found by a woman called Rosaura because they had experienced several false alarms in their attempts to track down their pet.

Jesse explained, “We got a call from a girl by the name of Rosaura in Los Angeles saying she had Cinny. We were cautiously optimistic. She said she’d bring Cinnabun to us, and everyone at the shop was really anxious for her to get here to see if it was, in fact, Cinny.”

The ‘Motorcycle Mania’ host has revealed Cinnabun is “in good shape”, but insists the couple are taking no chances on her going missing again.

He wrote on his blog, “Maybe a few pounds thinner than when she left. We’re taking her to the vet to get her all checked out and chipped, and GPS’d, and live-tracked by Google Earth… the works. We don’t want to lose this little girl again!”

As well as Sandra and Jesse, the couple’s other dog, Mr. T, was delighted to have his friend back.

Jesse added, “A big thanks to Rosaura in Los Angeles who found her and brought her back. West Coast thanks to you all, and a special thanks from Mr. T who is happy to have his little buddy back. Let the barking, wrestling and bone chasing begin!”

American Idol’s Top 24 for the current season were (over) dramatically announced on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, but due to a communication mix-up, one of the top twelve dudes lost his coveted spot.

Chris Golightly, a kind of Justin Guarini: II with a heartstring-tugging history growing up in foster care, wooed crowds with a version of Stand By Me during initial auditions. But an earlier, now defunct, contract with a “boy band” saw Golightly suddenly and brusquely DQ’d from the karaoke competition after a former manager threatened Idol’s management over the curly-haired crooner.

Golightly thinks the show jumped the gun in cutting him before investigating the email informant’s claims:

Shortly after Chris got the news that he’d made the cut, he says a former manager named Lawrence Franklin emailed 19 Entertainment claiming that Chris was under a recording contract… Chris says he then called Lawrence Franklin, reminding him that his contract had ended the month before he’d auditioned for Idol.

Within a day or two, Chris got another phone call, this one from American Idol supervising producer Patrick Lynn, telling him that he had been disqualified.

That same day, however, Chris says he and the Idol producers got another email from Franklin, this one saying that there had been a mix-up and that Chris had been released from his contract before he’d auditioned.

“This is not fair; I don’t know what to do,” he said when reached by phone this morning.

Fox released a statement about Golightly’s elimination:

“It has been determined that Chris Golightly is ineligible to continue in the competition. ‘American Idol’ contestant Tim Urban has replaced Golightly as part of the Top 24.”

Nicole Richie designed her own engagement ring.

The TV star, who revealed her betrothal to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden during an appearance on ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’ this week, worked with renowned celebrity jeweler Neil Lane on the band, which sports a flawless four carat, round diamond.

Lane told People magazine, “We designed it together. Nicole was lovely and wonderful to work with on it! She wanted a beautiful, special ring and wanted to be intimately involved in the design.”

The jeweler, who has previously created pieces for a host of stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron, also revealed Joel let his wife-to-be have complete control over the design.

He added, “Joel just wanted her to have her dream ring.”

It was on Monday, February 15, that Nicole, 28, confirmed she is engaged to Joel – with whom she has two children, daughter Harlow, two, and five-month-old son Sparrow.

Joel, 30, later revealed his joy with a posting on his twitter page.

He tweeted, “Yep. I’m engaged. Very happy. Yeah we’ve been engaged for a while so you’re all kind of late on that. But Thanks for the hooplah all the same. (sic)”

The couple are reportedly planning to marry this summer.

Cheryl Cole is expected to file for divorce from her husband Ashley Cole “within weeks”.

Friends of the ‘Fight for This Love’ singer, whose soccer player husband allegedly cheated on her with an unnamed blonde secretary, claim the 26-year-old pop beauty will leave him after growing “exhausted” by allegations of his infidelity.

One pal told the Daily Mail newspaper, “Cheryl is holding it together, she is extremely tough, don’t forget she comes from a council estate in Newcastle, England, and is a fighter.

“She loves Ashley, he is the love of her life, but there is only so much she will take.

“Cheryl is exhausted with it all. There was a point when she was going to ride it all out, but she has heard rumors of more women and cannot face it. They will split within weeks.”

This news comes shortly after a blonde office worker claimed she had slept with Ashley twice in 2008 after exchanging explicit pictures and text messages with the 29-year-old sportsman for weeks. Texts of a similar nature were also found on the phone of glamour model Sonia Wild.

If the couple, who wed in July 2006, do divorce, Cheryl can expect to receive a large percentage of Ashley’s wealth, because they didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement.

A legal source said, “This is an unusual situation for a footballer as very few have wives with their own earnings. However, the discrepancy between their net worths means that Mrs Cole would have a very strong case for a significant claim over a large portion of his wealth, now and in the future.”

Cheryl flew to Los Angeles yesterday, February 17, following her performance at the BRITs on Tuesday, February 16.

The Girls Aloud singer wasn’t wearing her $249,400 engagement or wedding ring before her flight, but had a similar gold-coloured rock on in its place.

A source said, “Cheryl’s most treasured possession is her diamond wedding ring. She is refusing to wear it. The fact she has replaced it with a decoy is a big two fingers up to Ashley. To onlookers it looks like she’s a married woman – but to Ashley it’s a clear sign that she feels their relationship is in big, big trouble.”

The ‘Shutter Island’ actor is grateful to ‘Career Day’ as it told him what path to take in life but admits it could have turned out so differently if he hadn’t been listening.

He told Stern magazine, “It was one of the most daunting experiences of my life, because everything could have come differently if I wouldn’t have been concentrating on what was said.

“I think it’s scary, this haphazardness of life. I could have been distracted on that day.”

Beyonce Knowles believes she has a happy marriage because they try to keep it as private as possible.

The ‘Halo’ singer married hip-hop superstar Jay-Z in a secret ceremony in 2008 but both are reluctant to speak about their home life because they think it will add extra pressure.

She said, “Jay and I have always been very discreet when it comes to our relationship. Even after we got married nothing changed about that. I think that saved us a lot of trouble.”

The 28-year-old beauty, who publicly thanked her spouse when she won a record six Grammys at last month’s ceremony, also revealed she was initially “scared” when she was regarded as a role model for young women but is now embracing it.

She told Germany’s FHM magazine, “The thought scared me at first. But now I think my music is more than just performing, dancing and shooting videos. I try to show women that we need to be there for each other and support each other and that you have to work to reach your goals.”

As a straight guy, it’s quite an interesting proposition. Anything on a film set that takes you by surprise like that, that gets your blood up, is good.

“I’m always interested in playing different people, in different situations. It doesn’t matter to me whether someone is in love with a man or a woman. I find the idea of love and romance interesting. I’m a sucker for it. I like playing someone who’s falling in love because I like the sensation of it.”
