Mel Gibson has reportedly been given the support of Britney Spears.

The 54-year-old actor – who is the subject of domestic violence allegations from ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, has been receiving regular phone calls from the ‘Womanizer’ singer after he previously helped her out following her much-publicised breakdown in 2008.

A source told In Touch weekly magazine, “Mel has been talking to her a lot. They speak on the phone all the time, usually late at night.

“Mel was one of the only people who reached out to help Britney when she was at her lowest point, and she believes that demonstrates what a loving and wonderful man he is.

“She wants people to give him a second chance – just like he gave her one when everyone else turned away.”

Speaking about lending 28-year-old Britney support, Mel admitted he wanted to help her because he felt no one else wanted to step in.

He said at the time, “She’s a nice kid. She was just going through a rough patch. You see kids that you know in the industry… I just felt like this poor kid she’s lining up to be stoned. I just thought, ‘I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her’, so I just called her and she’s doing great now.”

Mel received a visit from child protection services in Los Angeles yesterday, July 21, following allegations from Russian singer Oksana he had hit her and their eight-month-old daughter Lucia.

George Clooney is being presented with an Emmy award for his humanitarian efforts.

The 49-year-old Hollywood star will be honoured with the Bob Hope trophy for hosting a telethon that raised $50 million for earthquake-hit Haiti as well as his efforts to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina and raise awareness of the crisis in Darfur.

John Shaffner, chairman and chief executive of the TV academy, said Clooney was “an obvious choice” for the award.

He said, “George was an obvious choice for this honour.

“He has understood and harnessed the power of television, the most powerful medium of our time, to reach into the hearts of people around the world and compelled us to action on behalf of those in sudden and desperate need, as well as those tragically oppressed in Darfur.”

The prestigious award, established in 2002 after the late actor Bob Hope, has so far been given to three other recipients.

Bob’s daughter Linda is pleased with the choice of recipient.

She said, “Like my own father, George is a person who looks beyond himself to use his celebrity for good, to make a difference in the world and to inspire others to do the same.

“It’s particularly gratifying that he has been selected for this award, since our families have a history of friendship and a powerful, shared desire to help others.”

Previous recipients of the awards were Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby and Danny Thomas, who received it posthumously in 2004.

The Emmy Awards will take place on 29 August in Los Angeles.

Gary Barlow is planning a hike to the North Pole.

The Take That singer, who let a celebrity charity expedition up Mount Kilimanjaro last year, is hoping to convince a group of showbiz pals to join him on the grueling arctic trip in spring 2012 to raise money for BBC Sport Relief.

His latest challenge is likely to take a week to complete.

A source told Britain‘s The Sun newspaper, “Gary loves a challenge, so as soon as he finished the Kilimanjaro trip he was working out what to do next. There was talk of climbing Everest but that’s a seriously tough exercise.

“Getting to the North Pole is not exactly easier but it is more do-able and takes less time.”

Gary already seems to be shaping up for the challenge, after the singer and his Take That bandmates agreed to ban alcohol at their concerts next year.

The group, who have been rejoined by Robbie Williams, will only serve soft drinks backstage during their proposed epic 54-date tour for the sake of the ‘Angels’ singer and bandmate Mark Owen, who have battled alcohol problems in the past.

A source said, “It’s a sensitive subject but alcohol will be off limits for the band and crew. Their last tour was one giant party and for Mark and Robbie’s sake, that just won’t work this time around.”

The ever-popular zombie genre’s reigning favorite book is set to be a box office hit, it seems, as Brad Pitt has committed to starring in the novel’s big screen adaptation.

World War Z is unique in its execution as a novel that presents a zombie apocalypse in war movie style vignettes, and along with author Max Brooks’s The Zombie Survival Guide, it has been massively successful within the zombie genre. (The Zombie Survival Guide is also being adapted as a film.) Brooks spoke to MTV about the film at Comic-Con:

Brooks said the studio recently received a new draft of the “World War Z” script, and “Quantum of Solace” director Marc Forster is still attached to direct the film.

“I’m glad they took their time, and are trying to make the best zombie movie they can,” said Brooks. “I’m so glad they stayed with the project and so glad they found the right team.”

Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment is producing the film, and a summer 2012 release is expected.

The 54-year-old actor had a formal visit from the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services after allegations by his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva he assaulted her and their eight-month-old daughter Lucia.

A source told RadarOnline.com, “The meeting lasted for several hours.”

Oksana has claimed he punched her in the head during a violent row while she was holding the baby, leaving the tot with a mark on her chin.

However, Mel has denied this.

Earlier this week, it was alleged that during the same row, Mel threatened to shoot himself and Oksana.

The ‘Mad Max’ star allegedly pulled a gun on the Russian singer and said he would shoot her, their daughter and her 12-year-old son Alexander, before turning the weapon on himself.

Speaking about the January 6 incident, a source said, “Mel punched her in the mouth and then again in the side of the head.

“Oksana has told authorities it was horrific and she thought she was going to die.”

The insider claimed Oksana, 40, had told authorities she was holding Lucia during the alleged attack and fell backwards on the bed as the actor tried to choke her.

The ‘Braveheart’ actor then reportedly yelled “f**k you” and called Oksana a “f**king ****”.

Alexander, whose father is former James Bond star Timothy Dalton, is believed to have witnessed the row in the bedroom and was interviewed by child protection services agents last Friday, July 16.

Lindsay Lohan burst into tears when her mother and sister visited her in jail yesterday, July 21.

The troubled actress was cheered by the meeting but couldn’t contain her emotions when Dina and 16-year-old Ali arrived at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, for the first time since she was incarcerated on Tuesday, July 20.

A source said, “Tears were shed.

“The visit was very emotional, but Lindsay’s spirits were lifted when she saw her mom and sister. Dina seemed relieved to see Lindsay and that she was staying strong.”

The detention centre could face criticism for allowing the 24-year-old star to be visited so early into her stay, as she originally wasn’t allowed visitors until Saturday, July 24.

Visitors are usually only accepted on Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am to 3.30pm and 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

However, it is believed the decision for her to have the private meeting was for safety reasons.

Law enforcement officials said, “Lindsay might get visitors after the official visiting hours are over for the other inmates for security reasons. It’s for the safety of everyone.”

Lindsay’s list of people allowed to visit her includes her ex-girlfriend Samantha Ronson but not her estranged father Michael Lohan.

Meanwhile, Michael has been accused of physically attacking his fiancee Kate Major during a row, and she claims to have photographs of her injuries.

She said, “The reason I am not speaking is because the truth will come out. Michael has always threatened to try to ruin me in the press. It’s sad he can’t keep his mouth shut and stop making up lies. Consider the source. I just need privacy at this time.”

Kate is believed to have filed a domestic violence report with police earlier this week.

However, Michael has denied the claims and admits he expects their upcoming marriage to go ahead as normal, even though she has “drained” their joint bank accounts.

Michael told RadarOnline.com, “I just found out she drained one of our bank accounts without telling me.”

And when asked if the wedding, scheduled for the end of this year in New York is still on, Michael responded, “I see no reason why the wedding wouldn’t still be on.”

Leonardo DiCaprio went “wild” after starring in ‘Titanic’.

He added in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, “I had better success meeting girls before ‘Titanic. My interactions with them didn’t have all the stigma behind it, not to mention there wasn’t a perception of her talking to me for only one reason.”

Christina Applegate is pregnant.

The ‘Samantha Who?’ star is expecting her first child with her musician fiance Martyn Lenoble and the couple are said to be “thrilled” with the news.

Christina’s representative confirmed she is expecting to People magazine. No other details are known at the time of writing.

The 38-year-old actress and bass player Martyn, 41, got engaged on Valentine’s Day, February 14, after dating for two years, but are yet to set a date for the big day.

Earlier this year, Christina admitted she was keen to start a family with Martyn.

She said, “What’s next? Babies, lots of babies. Well, not lots of babies, but a couple.”

The TV star has also previously praised Martyn for helping her overcome breast cancer in 2008.

Christina, who had to undergo a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with the disease, said, “I have a small but mighty support system and Martyn has really been an incredible part of my life. “Without him, I don’t know if I could’ve gone through any of it. He came around at a time when there was a lot of loss in my life on many levels, so he’s been a really incredible help.”

She wrote on her blog, “I can’t believe my lil guy is already 7-months-old, ahhhh I feel like he was just born yesterday!!!!! Watching baby Hank grow has been the most incredible gift I’ve ever been given, and each day I feel like I’m seeing him for the first time! (sic)”
